How to Sell

Welcome to Exclusive Whisky Auctions. We believe that the true financial value of liquid gold belongs squarely in the hands of the collectors, traders, and corporate enterprises who keep this industry alive. By completely dismantling outdated brick-and-mortar commission models, our platform introduces a revolutionary, risk-free environment backed by strict empirical data science and advanced legal-fiscal technology.

Read our comprehensive 4-step operational blueprint below to understand exactly how to liquidate your rare assets and reach an elite, global network of whisky connoisseurs and institutional investors.

Step 1: Create Account, Veriff Verification & Expert Lot Submission

To strictly comply with international liquor trading regulations and enforce age compliance, all creators of inventory must be fully verified before uploading lots.

  • The Registration Process & One-Time Fee: Click the registration button to establish your personal or corporate seller account. Creating and biometrically verifying a new account is subject to a non-refundable, one-time registration fee of €3.00 (excl. VAT — local VAT may be calculated on top of this verification fee depending on your status and country of residence, matching the regulatory path of digital platform services). This covers the high compliance overhead of our security systems.
  • Mandatory 18+ Verification via Veriff: To protect our marketplace, all sellers must complete a swift digital scan of an official, valid government-issued ID (passport, identity card, or driver's license) and an instantaneous biometric facial check via the certified software Veriff. Accounts that do not pass this verification are strictly barred from listing lots.
  • The Seller Dashboard & Photo Submission: Once verified, you gain access to your personal encrypted dashboard to submit your bottles. You are required to upload high-resolution, unedited photographs capturing the front label, rear label, capsule integrity, seal, fill level (ullage), and original packaging condition.
  • Empirical Data Science Review: Once submitted, your lot enters our verification queue. Our active Auction Master, Pierre Sauren, personally oversees and anchors the valuation architecture. By cross-referencing 20 years of continuous historical secondary-market transaction data and global supply indicators, we verify historical provenance and ensure your lot description is mathematically and physically flawless.
  • Approval and Irrevocability: Upon digital approval by our team, your lot is scheduled for the upcoming active auction cycle. In accordance with Section 3.1 of our Seller Terms, once a lot is scheduled, the submission becomes legally binding and irrevocable. The asset must remain safely in your custody and cannot be withdrawn or listed elsewhere during the active countdown.

Step 2: The 0% Sales Commission Blueprint & Reserve Price Protection

We believe in absolute marketplace fairness, which is why we extract zero percentage cuts from the hammer prices of our sellers.

  • 100% Hammer Price Retention: When the live auction countdown terminates and your lot is allocated to the highest bidder, you retain 100% of the raw hammer price. There are no complex commission percentages or hidden administrative deductibles applied to your revenue.
  • The Risk-Free Guarantee: To protect your investments, you can establish a hidden Reserve Price (minimum price) for your lot. If the live auction countdown concludes and the highest bid fails to meet your reserve price target, the lot remains unsold. Crucially, if a kavel remains unsold, the platform completely waives all commercial platform fees. You pay absolutely nothing. Listing your inventory is entirely risk-free.
  • Flat Overhead Fees Upon Sale: To support our digital venue and secure financial rails, the platform deducts only two flat overhead fees from your final settlement layout, exclusively upon a successful sale: a fixed €2.00 Sold Lot Fee (excl. VAT — local VAT may be calculated on top of this fee depending on your status and country of residence) and a fixed €2.00 Reserve Price Setting Fee (excl. VAT — local VAT may be calculated on top of this fee depending on your status and country of residence, applicable only if a reserve price was set, met, and sold).

Step 3: Secure Escrow Clearance & Financial Protection

We safeguard your commercial transactions by enforcing an unshakeable escrow protocol. You are legally protected because the buyer must complete full payment before you are ever required to ship your asset.

  • The 3-Day Payment Window: Following the close of the auction, the winning bidder is under a strict legal obligation to settle their total checkout invoice within 3 business days. Bypassing this timeframe triggers automatic late penalties up to 5%, enforced by our international debt collection agency in Amsterdam.
  • Licensed Escrow Isolation: The buyer's capital is securely transferred and locked within an independent, licensed third-party escrow account managed by our accredited payment processors.
  • Official Shipping Clearance: Once the payment is fully secured and verified inside the escrow account, our system triggers an automated Official Shipping Clearance Email. This notification provides you with the buyer's verified delivery address, the explicit cross-border tax framework applied to the transaction, and the green light to dispatch your asset. Warning: Never hand over a package to a carrier before receiving this official automated clearance email.

Step 4: Specialized Breakage-Proof Logistics & Automated Payout

While the physical execution of transit is carried out directly from your location, the platform tightly mandates strict logistical parameters to eliminate transit exposures and protect the payout trail.

  • Breakage-Proof Packaging Mandate: Given the fragile and highly valuable nature of vintage spirits, you are contractually required to enclose the bottles in professional, shock-absorbing, specialized glass-transport packaging (such as heavy-duty double-walled cardboard cylinders or engineered air cushions).
  • Mandatory 18+ Statutory Compliance: You are legally obligated to register the shipment with a reputable international carrier (e.g., DHL, PostNL, UPS) with the mandatory "Signature Required + 18+ Age Verification Check" option enabled. For cross-border non-EU exports, you must securely affix the appropriate customs forms (CN22/CN23) and include the commercial platform invoice marked with the mandatory clearing phrase: *Collected on behalf of the seller – third-party transit*.
  • The 3-Day Inspection & Release: Once you drop off the parcel, you must instantly upload the tracking number into your Seller Dashboard. As soon as the carrier tracking data confirms successful delivery to the destination, a strict 3-calendar-day quality inspection window begins for the buyer.
  • Payout Transaction & External Provider Fees: When this window expires without a formal dispute, your net sales proceeds are wired directly to your bank account or payment provider. Please note: Standard SEPA bank transfers (EUR) within the EU and the Eurozone are 100% free of charge with zero platform processing fees. Payouts sent to bank accounts outside the EU/Eurozone, or settlements processed in non-EUR currencies, may be subject to external cross-border transaction fees, currency conversion spreads, or digital wallet fees levied directly by third-party financial institutions (such as PayPal, Wise, or intermediate correspondent banks). These external transactional charges are born entirely by the receiving non-EU seller.

Step 5: Detailed Payout & VAT Breakdown (Scenarios)

For absolute fiscal clarity regarding how your sales settlement, transport budget, and platform fees are calculated based on your legal tax profile and the buyer's destination, please consult our official structural matrix below:

How Do Our Invoices, Buyer Protection, and Payouts Work?

Welcome to our transparent calculation example! Whether you are buying or selling an exclusive bottle, we believe in clear figures upfront so you never face surprises afterward.

To demonstrate how invoices, VAT flows, and payouts work in practice, we use a fixed calculation example across all scenarios below:

  • Hammer Price: €100.00 (excl. VAT — VAT may apply depending on seller status)
  • Shipping Costs: €30.00 (excl. VAT — VAT may apply depending on seller status)
  • Buyer Protection Fee: €2.00 (excl. VAT — VAT may apply depending on user status and location)
  • Reserve Price Setting Fee (When Met): €2.00 (excl. VAT — VAT may apply depending on user status and location)
  • Fixed Sales Fee Per Lot (When Sold): €2.00 (excl. VAT — VAT may apply depending on user status and location)
  • Payout Transaction Fees: 100% Free for standard SEPA bank wires (EUR) within the EU/Eurozone. External provider fees, currency conversion spreads, or international cross-border handling fees only apply to international payouts outside the EU/Eurozone and are deducted directly by the respective financial institutions.

For Buyers: Bid Carefree with Our Buyer Protection

As an independent auction platform, we do not own, inspect, or ship bottles ourselves; the sale and physical shipment represent a direct agreement between the buyer and the seller. Consequently, we are not liable for loss, theft, breakage, or delays during transit, nor for any quality disputes between users.

However, we offer a unique, secure service through our buyer protection. In the unlikely event that something goes wrong during the transaction or transport by the seller, we immediately step in to mediate. Your payment is securely held by our platform in a dedicated third-party escrow account and is only released to the seller once the lot has been delivered.

If a dispute or transport damage cannot be properly resolved by the responsible party through our mediation, our platform will—under the terms of the buyer protection—issue an appropriate compensation and/or a full refund of the purchase amount to you. This way, you are optimally protected through our service without our platform assuming the legal liability of third parties.

For Sellers: Sell Successfully and Protected

As a seller, you benefit from a global audience of whisky enthusiasts and collectors. We protect your sale by requiring the buyer to settle the full invoice before you dispatch the bottle. Thanks to our transparent sales settlements, you can see exactly which commissions and fixed platform fees (such as reserve price or lot fees) are deducted. The remaining amount is transferred directly to your bank account following a successful delivery to the buyer.

Global Logistics and Premium Carriers

The actual shipment of the lots is carried out by the seller, but our platform facilitates this process worldwide to all countries where the import of alcohol is legally permitted. To ensure that rare whisky and exclusive spirits survive highly fragile transport, we mandate the use of the most reputable international courier services and specialized carriers.

Fiscal & Legal Clearing Layer (Global Application):

To fully protect the platform from unexpected tax exposures and operational liabilities, all transactions operate strictly under a Third-Party Clearing Mechanism. The platform acts solely as an administrative collection and escrow agent for the Hammer Price and Shipping Costs. These specific funds are collected entirely on behalf of the seller and are never recognized as platform revenue. Consequently, the platform is entirely excluded from the physical fulfillment chain and any domestic or international transport tax obligations.

Scenario 1: Private EU Transaction

Seller: Private Individual (e.g., Germany) | Buyer: Private Individual (e.g., France)

1. The Invoice for the EU Buyer (Private Individual)

Because the seller is a private individual and the buyer is located inside the EU, the bottle itself is VAT-free. Local VAT (e.g., French VAT 20%) is calculated only on the platform services provided to the buyer (commission and buyer protection).

TOTAL PAYABLE BY BUYER€1.60€139.60

2. The Sales Settlement for the EU Seller (Private Individual)

As a private seller, you pay 0% sales commission. We are legally required to calculate the local VAT of the consumer (e.g., 19% German VAT) on our platform services provided to an EU consumer.

Invoice LineAmountVAT RateVAT AmountTotal
Gross Buyer Revenue (Bottle + Shipping)€130.000%€0.00€130.00

Platform Commission Seller (0%)-€0.0019%€0.00-€0.00
NET PAYOUT REVENUE-€0.76€125.24

Why VAT Applies & OSS Remittance:

The bottle and shipping costs are tax-free because private individuals cannot charge VAT. Standard taxes apply only to our digital platform services. Our platform (Netherlands) remits €1.60 via the OSS portal under the buyer's country and €0.76 via this same portal under the seller's country (for the seller fees). The private EU seller does not need to declare anything.

Platform Gross Margin: Exactly €12.00.

Scenario 2: Private EU Seller & Buyer Outside the EU (Worldwide)

Seller: Private Individual (e.g., Germany) | Buyer: Private Individual OR Company Outside the EU (e.g., Hong Kong)

1. The Invoice for the Buyer Outside the EU

Because the seller is a private individual and the buyer is located outside the EU, this transaction constitutes a direct export supply. Due to this export status, the entire buyer invoice is fully exempt from European VAT.

2. The Sales Settlement for the EU Seller (Private Individual)

The buyer is outside the EU, but the seller is an EU consumer, so local VAT (e.g., 19% German VAT) still applies to the seller platform fees.

Invoice LineAmountVAT RateVAT AmountTotal
Gross Buyer Revenue (Bottle + Shipping)€130.000%€0.00€130.00

Platform Commission Seller (0%)-€0.0019%€0.00-€0.00
NET PAYOUT REVENUE-€0.76€125.24

Why VAT Applies & OSS Remittance:

The buyer invoice is completely tax-free due to export. Standard taxes apply only to the platform fees charged to the EU-based seller. Our platform remits €0.00 for the buyer via the OSS portal. However, we do remit €0.76 via this same electronic portal under the seller's country. The EU seller receives €125.24 net. Note: External cross-border processing charges or localized financial institution fees for payouts outside the Eurozone remain the sole financial responsibility of the seller.

Platform Gross Margin: Exactly €12.00.

Scenario 3: Commercial EU Seller & Private EU Buyer

Seller: Company (e.g., Germany) | Buyer: Private Individual (e.g., France)

1. The Invoice for the EU Buyer (Private Individual)

Because the seller is a commercial business and the buyer is located inside the EU, this constitutes a commercial B2C supply. Destination VAT of the buyer's country (e.g., French VAT 20%) applies to every single component (the bottle and shipping).

Invoice LineAmountVAT RateVAT AmountTotal

TOTAL PAYABLE BY BUYER€27.60€167.60

2. The Sales Settlement for the EU Seller (Company / B2B)

Cross-border B2B service: platform fees are legally reverse-charged (0% VAT).

Invoice LineAmountVAT RateVAT AmountTotal

Platform Commission Seller (0%)-€0.000%€0.00-€0.00
NET PAYOUT REVENUE (Incl. Buyer VAT)€152.00

Why VAT Applies & Actions Required:

The buyer is a private consumer, so destination taxes apply to the full transaction. Our platform collects the total amount and remits €1.60 via the OSS portal under the buyer's country to cover the buyer service fees. The seller fees of €4.00 fall under B2B reverse-charge rules and go completely outside the electronic portal. Crucial: The commercial EU seller must report and remit the local destination taxes of the bottle and shipping via their own national OSS filing.

Platform Gross Margin: Exactly €12.00.

Scenario 4: Commercial EU Seller & Buyer Outside the EU (Worldwide)

Seller: Company (e.g., Germany) | Buyer: Private Individual OR Company Outside the EU (e.g., Hong Kong)

1. The Invoice for the Buyer Outside the EU

Because the seller is a commercial business and the buyer is located outside the EU, this transaction constitutes a direct commercial export supply. Due to this export status, the entire invoice is completely exempt from VAT.

TOTAL PAYABLE BY BUYER€0.00€138.00

2. The Sales Settlement for the EU Seller (Company / B2B)

Platform services remain B2B reverse-charged (0% VAT). No VAT is due on the bottle because it physically leaves the EU.

Platform Commission Seller (0%)-€0.000%€0.00-€0.00
NET PAYOUT REVENUE€0.00€126.00

Why VAT Applies & Actions Required:

No filings are required in the OSS portal by anyone since the delivery qualifies as a textbook export. Our platform transfers €126.00 gross directly to the commercial seller's account. Note: External financial institution overheads, cross-border wire processing rates, or currency conversion spreads for payouts outside the Eurozone remain the sole financial obligation of the seller.

Platform Gross Margin: Exactly €12.00.

Scenario 5: Transaction Entirely Outside the EU (Worldwide to Worldwide)

Seller: Private OR Company Outside the EU (e.g., USA) | Buyer: Private OR Company Outside the EU (e.g., Japan)

1. The Invoice for the Buyer Outside the EU

Since both transacting parties are located entirely outside the EU and the asset never enters EU territory, European VAT legislation is completely non-applicable. All lines display 0% European VAT.

Invoice LineAmountVAT RateVAT AmountTotal
Hammer Price (Lot #12345)€100.00€0.00€0.00€100.00

2. The Sales Settlement for the Seller Outside the EU

Platform services delivered to non-EU entities are fully exempt from European VAT (0%).

Platform Commission Seller (0%)-€0.0019%€0.00-€0.00
NET PAYOUT REVENUE€0.00€126.00

Important Fiscal Architecture for Shipping & Hammer Prices:

For transactions occurring entirely outside the European Union, the platform acts strictly as an administrative escrow agent. The Hammer Price and Shipping Costs are collected solely on behalf of the seller ("Collected on behalf of the seller – third-party transit"). These funds do not constitute platform revenue, eliminating any local transport tax liabilities for the platform. Any local taxes (e.g., US Sales Tax) must be handled locally by the users. Note: All intermediate banking fees, third-party platform cuts (such as PayPal or international wire charges), and currency conversion spreads required to convert the EUR settlement into native non-EU currencies are processed directly by the respective financial institutions and born by the receiving seller.

Why VAT Applies/Does Not Apply:

It makes no difference in this scenario whether the parties are commercial or private. Because the entire transaction takes place entirely outside the borders of the European Union, European VAT legislation is simply not applicable. This transaction remains 100% outside the OSS portal. Any local taxes (such as US sales tax) must be handled locally by the users themselves.

Platform Gross Margin: Exactly €12.00.

Scenario 6: Cross-Border Commercial EU Transaction (B2B to B2B)

Seller: Company (e.g., Germany) | Buyer: Company (e.g., France)

1. The Invoice for the EU Buyer (Company / B2B)

Because the seller is a commercial business and the buyer is an EU corporate entity with a valid VAT number, this constitutes an intra-Community cross-border B2B supply. All digital platform services and the asset itself are cleared at 0% VAT.

Invoice LineAmountVAT RateVAT AmountTotal
Hammer Price (Lot #12345)€100.000%€0.00€100.00

TOTAL PAYABLE BY BUYER€0.00€138.00

2. The Sales Settlement for the EU Seller (Company / B2B)

Services provided to the commercial seller are fully cleared at 0% VAT via the B2B reverse-charge mechanism.

Platform Commission Seller (0%)-€0.000%€0.00-€0.00
NET PAYOUT REVENUE€0.00€126.00

Why VAT Applies & OSS Remittance:

This is a purely commercial cross-border chain. It remains completely outside the OSS portal because that filing network is exclusively meant for transactions with private individuals (B2C). All parties account for the reverse-charge VAT locally in their regular national tax returns.

Platform Gross Margin: Exactly €12.00.

Scenario 7: Domestic Commercial EU Transaction (Domestic B2B)

Seller: Company (e.g., Germany) | Buyer: Company (e.g., Germany)

1. The Invoice for the Domestic Buyer (Company / B2B)

Because both transacting corporate entities are located within the exact same EU country, the bottle sale constitutes a domestic commercial B2B supply. The seller must charge their local national VAT (e.g., 19% German VAT) on the hammer price and shipping costs, while platform fees from the Netherlands remain cross-border B2B reverse-charged (0%).

Invoice LineAmountVAT RateVAT AmountTotal

2. The Sales Settlement for the Domestic Seller (Company / B2B)

The platform services provided to the commercial seller are fully cleared at 0% VAT via the B2B reverse-charge mechanism.

Invoice LineAmountVAT RateVAT AmountTotal

Platform Commission Seller (0%)-€0.000%€0.00-€0.00
NET PAYOUT REVENUE (Inbound to Seller)€0.00€150.70

Why VAT Applies & Actions Required:

This transaction remains entirely outside the OSS portal because it is a B2B flow. Our platform transfers €150.70 to the domestic seller (which includes the €24.70 buyer VAT). The seller is legally responsible for reporting and remitting this domestic VAT directly to their own national tax authority. The domestic buyer can fully reclaim the VAT locally as input tax.

Platform Gross Margin: Exactly €12.00.
